Ka tupu tahi tatou mo to tatou awa

A speculative project using 2D cel on urban gardens that encourages the audience to participate and educate themselves on the concept of a future community garden. I was responsible for designing and animating.

I was in charge of research, script writing, storyboarding, character development, styleframing and animating. When producing the storyboard, the inspiration was stan walker’s music video “I am”. The music video inspired the use of Maori patterns and a down to earth feel of connection between the water and earth. Cel frame to frame animation was utilized as the imperfections and hand drawn components created a personal feeling between the message and whanua that enhanced the emotional response. Finding a correct colour palette to work with did bog this project down with testing various colours to find the correct emotions and meaning. As a team we focused on blues and purples as Kahurangi is a symbol of the spiritual world in Maori culture. The choice to focus on this colours meaning is that the woman at the start of the animation and near the end with the waka, is an ancestor that’s informing the audience of the importance to preserve and rehabilitate our environment and the ecosystem.
